Tradition has it that for silent films, the pianist improvises as the film is shown. However the film “Shift” has invented a whole new set of rules, turning silent cinema on its head.
In effect the idea is quite a novelty! Antoine Carlier, the film director, improvises the editing of the film to Guillaume de Chassy’s musical compositions. That is, the film editor edits to the music, using images that have been specially selected for the occasion.
On stage, Carlier plays with the lighting, speed and order of the sequences in time to the music.
De Chassy answers him by improvising to his own musical compositions.
An unpredictable dialogue starts up. The film will never be the same...
